A story about the power of imagination and wishes (and magic)

About the story:
Noah and Lucy want a snowy christmas, only that they can not control nature and make it snow.
They receive a snow globe with a house inside, one very much like their own house. It is time to go to bed but Lucy and Noah can not get to sleep. All they wish is a white Christmas. Suddenly, something magical happens...

How I felt about it:
Beautifully illustrated in a delicate warm palette of reddish in a graphite grey and cream background. I love the delicate expressions on the children's faces that go from disappointment to excitement.
The end papers are also delightful! The front one can be used to predict the story and the last one is a display of pure, innocence and happiness.

How can the story help children believe in magic? Imagination is a powerful tool that children use when they play. Picture books are perfect as springboards to foster imagination and delightment in simple things.

Who would not like a snowy Christmas! Let's create it with just a few resources: (I like making crafts the old way, with things we have at home)
-use paper balls and enjoy a snowball fight!
  • prepare your own snowball: you need a glass ball or just a glass.
  • cut paper into tiny pieces (or use sparkling snow or glitter) and put them inside the ball/glass.
  • cut a cardboard to cover the open lid of the ball/glass.
  • draw and cut the shape of a figure you want to stick or get a figurine to stick to the cardboard.
  • Fix the cardboard to the open lid, wait till it dries and turn it round.

Ideas to use after reading:
  • Talk about gifts and reflect about their importance/ need; is it necessary to give/ receive many presents? What present are more valuable, the expensive ones or the ones that can not be bought?
  • In the story, snow was the gift the children wanted; something that can not be bought. Talk about what is more important: expensive gifts or the ones that can not be bought?
  • Ask children to make a list of gifts they would like to receive that can not be bought. (find a printable resource below)
  • Find how Christmas is celebrated in places with hot weather.
